Chromosome segregation: Samurai separation of Siamese sisters

چکیده

How do cells ensure that sister chromatids are precisely partitioned in mitosis? New studies on budding yeast have revealed that sister chromatid separation at anaphase requires endoproteolytic cleavage of a protein that maintains the association between sister chromatids.

Getting through anaphase: splitting the sisters and beyond.

Sister-chromatid cohesion, thought to be primarily mediated by the cohesin complex, is essential for chromosome segregation. The forces holding the two sisters resist the tendency of microtubules to prematurely pull sister DNAs apart and thereby prevent random segregation of the genome during mitosis, and consequent aneuploidy. By counteracting the spindle pulling forces, cohesion between the t...

Splitting the chromosome: cutting the ties that bind sister chromatids.

In eukaryotic cells, sister DNA molecules remain physically connected from their production at S phase until their separation during anaphase. This cohesion is essential for the separation of sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell at mitosis. It also permits chromosome segregation to take place long after duplication has been completed. Recent work has identified a multisubunit complex...

I-35: Polar Body Analysis by Array CGH Identifies Women with Varying Susceptibility to Aneuploidy and Suggests that Non-disjunction Is Not The Predominant Mechanism Leading to Aneuploidy in Humans

Background: The maternal age effect for trisomy is well known. However what is less established is whether certain women are more (or less) prone to segregation errors, independent of age. Trisomy arises primarily through maternal meiosis I chromosome segregation errors however the precise mechanism by which these errors occur is unclear. Current dogma attributes the origin of trisomy to malseg...

Genes involved in sister chromatid separation and segregation in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Accurate chromosome segregation requires the precise coordination of events during the cell cycle. Replicated sister chromatids are held together while they are properly attached to and aligned by the mitotic spindle at metaphase. At anaphase, the links between sisters must be promptly dissolved to allow the mitotic spindle to rapidly separate them to opposite poles. To isolate genes involved i...

The axial element protein HTP-3 promotes cohesin loading and meiotic axis assembly in C. elegans to implement the meiotic program of chromosome segregation.

Faithful transmission of the genome through sexual reproduction requires reduction of genome copy number during meiosis to produce haploid sperm and eggs. Meiosis entails steps absent from mitosis to achieve this goal. When meiosis begins, sisters are held together by sister chromatid cohesion (SCC), mediated by the cohesin complex. Homologs then become linked through crossover recombination. S...
